Does a better router make your internet run faster? My folks internet is slower then shit, they say its the fastest they can get out in the country and their router is probably 5-6 years old. If they buy a new one will the speed jump up?

Only if the speed that the current router can handle is lower than the internet speed and the new one isn't.

there’s a lot to go into this. First run a speed test on wireless, then run a speed test on wired.

If your speedtest on wired internet is drastically faster than your wireless, a router will help.

If it’s the same in both, router won’t do anything else for you. You also have to have to consider the devices attached and what wireless signals they can receive. if your devices can do the newest signal - AC. Can the devices only support 2.4ghz or can they do 5ghz (stronger)?

The key is to do the wired vs non-wired testing and then worry about the rest though.

sometimes, do a speed test while on wireless in the usual usage location, one sitting near the router and one hardwired on Ethernet to the router.

Venerable is right. I used mine for years and it got crushed in our move last year.

Literally crushed.

I re-assembled it and it worked decent for a few months until I bought a new one.

There’s an app for phones as well if you want to test there as well, that’s good for seeing how distance can effect the wireless speed.

Just got it set up and so far it’s noticeably faster than the rented modem from Comcast. I meant to do a before and after speed test

Fairly simple set up. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to take full use of both bands but the extra antennas are a big plus because now I get full service in my whole house. With the rented one it didn't have an antenna and I had a weak signal in my bedroom even in a small house.

This question was answered but it's noticeably faster for me. It's clear my modem/router combo was a bottle neck for me. I just wanted to no longer pay to rent from my ISP

Yeah but I picked mine up for really cheap. Don't remember exactly but I think it was $60-70
